A safer approach is:

  1. Wash your hands and cleanse the skin gently.
  2. Apply a warm compress for 5–10 minutes to help soften the area.
  3. For whiteheads or blackheads, a clean comedone extractor (a loop-shaped extraction tool) is safer than squeezing with fingernails.
  4. Gently place the loop around the lesion and apply light, even pressure. If the contents do not come out easily, stop rather than forcing it.
  5. Clean the area afterward and apply a spot treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid if appropriate for your skin.

Avoid:

  • Using needles, pins, or sharp objects at home.
  • Trying to extract deep, painful, red, or cystic pimples.
  • Repeated squeezing after nothing comes out.

For large, painful, or recurring pimples, a dermatologist can perform a sterile extraction or other treatments with much lower risk of scarring.
