A few things that can help:

  • Avoid popping or squeezing pimples when possible. It can push inflammation deeper, increase the chance of scarring, and spread bacteria.
  • Wash your face gently twice daily with a mild cleanser.
  • Try an over-the-counter treatment containing:
    • Benzoyl peroxide (helps reduce acne-causing bacteria)
    • Salicylic acid (helps unclog pores)
    • Adapalene 0.1% (a retinoid that helps prevent new acne from forming)
  • Use non-comedogenic (“won’t clog pores”) moisturizers and sunscreen.
  • Change pillowcases regularly and avoid picking at your skin.

If your acne is:

  • Large, painful, or cyst-like
  • Leaving scars or dark marks
  • Continuing for months despite treatment
  • Covering large areas of your face, chest, or back

then it’s a good idea to see a dermatologist. Prescription treatments can be much more effective for severe acne.

Can you tell me:

  1. How old are you?
  2. Is the acne mainly on your face, chest, back, or elsewhere?
  3. Are the bumps small whiteheads/blackheads, or large painful lumps under the skin?
  4. How long has this been going on?
