Ingrown hairs on the face happen when a hair curls back into the skin or gets trapped under dead skin after shaving, plucking, or waxing. They can cause small bumps, redness, itching, and sometimes infection.
What you can do
- Stop shaving the area for a few days (if possible)
- This gives the hair a chance to grow out naturally.
- Avoid plucking or digging at the hair with your fingers.
- Use warm compresses
- Apply a warm, damp cloth to the area for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day.
- This can soften the skin and help the hair emerge.
- Gentle exfoliation
- Use a soft washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant containing:
- Salicylic acid
- Glycolic acid
- Exfoliate gently 2–3 times per week. Over-scrubbing can make things worse.
- Use a soft washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant containing:
- Improve shaving technique
- Shave after a warm shower.
- Use a lubricating shaving gel.
- Shave in the direction of hair growth.
- Avoid stretching the skin while shaving.
- Consider using an electric trimmer instead of a very close razor shave.
- Reduce inflammation
- A mild over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream may help for a few days if the area is irritated (unless your doctor has told you not to use it).
- If acne-like bumps are common, products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may help.
